U of L Celebrates Nobel Announcement

Monday's announcement that a German scientist will share this year's Nobel Prize for medicine is being celebrated at the University of Louisville.Dr. Harald zur Hausen is being honored for identifying the human pappiloma virus, or HPV, as the cause of cervical cancer.That led to the development of a cervical cancer vaccine with the help of researchers at U of L's James Graham Brown Cancer Center. Of of them is Dr. A. Bennett Jensen, who says he's known zur Hausen since 1975."He's just been a continual source of inspiration and really forward thinking for all of us," Jensen said.Jensen says the Nobel Prize helps validate decades of work by zur Hausen and dozens of other scientists.Dr. zur Hausen will share the prize with two French researchers.

Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
