U of L, Jewish Hospital Announce Stem Cell Trial

The University of Louisville and Jewish Hospital will participate in a first-of-its kind clinical trial using adult cardiac stem cells to treat heart disease.Study leader Dr. Roberto Bolli (pictured) says scientists in Louisville will take tissue from heart patients and send it to colleagues at Harvard University, where adult cardiac stem cells will be extracted."They will grow the cells in vitro until they have approximately one million cells. Then they will send them back to us. At that point, we will inject these cells into the same patients from which the sample had been harvested before," he said.Dr. Bolli says the first patient in the trial could be enrolled as early as next week.(Photo courtesy of University of Louisville)
