A building on the University of Louisville's Belknap Campus has been renamed in honor of former school president John Shumaker.
A dedication ceremony was held Monday to rename the Belknap Research Building after Shumaker, who was U of L president from 1995 to 2002.University officials say Shumaker deserves the honor because he helped boost the school's national reputation in research and academics and lobbied for higher education reforms that cleared the state legislature in 1997.Shumaker says those accomplishments were the result of a team effort by the campus community."It was something--the vision that we constructed--it was an action plan that we had the focus and discipline to lay out in very clear detail," Shumaker said.
Shumaker left U of L to become the president of the University of Tennessee, but stepped down from that post the following year amid questions about his spending of university funds and his business dealings. He's now an educational consultant in Pakistan.
