U of L Students Displaced by Fire Have Temporary Housing, Classes Resume After 4 pm

A dozen University of Louisville students were displaced by a fire in their residence hall after lighting struck the building early Tuesday, but officials say the building can house the students in other rooms until a more permanent solution is found.Providence, the privately-run student housing complex located near U of L's Belknap Campus, caught fire but no students were injured, officials said. Nearly two dozen students were affected and Providence officials said half of the displaced students had renters insurance. The Red Cross responded to the incident and provided assistance, said U of L President James Ramsey. The flash floods that came with the storm damaged three buildings including Strickler Hall, Houchens Hall and the Chemistry Building, he said. Several cars were also damaged on various nearby streets including Floyd, Third  and Brook streets and on the eastern part of campus.Ramsey was giving an orientation speech at Strickler Hall to a group of students when he was made aware of the school’s problem.“One of those students raised their hand and said there’s some water coming under the door here," he said.U of L spent nearly $21 million renovating after flash floods in 2009 and the university has, again, learned where it can improve infrastructure, said Ramsey. The damage from Tuesday's storms are not nearly as drastic, Ramsey said.Classes in the morning and afternoon were cancelled but will resume after 4pm.
