U Of L To Create New Oversight Office

The University of Louisville is reorganizing several offices that manage internal oversight.Starting on July 1st, the school will have an Associate Vice President for Audit and Compliance. The position links together the offices of privacy, information security and audit services, and will make sure the university is in line with internal policy and state law.The decision to create the office comes after former Education Dean Robert Felner was sentenced to prison on charges stemming from the mismanagement of federal funds. Provost Shirley Willihnganz says the new position is not entirely a response to Felner's actions."Mostly this is not a reactive set of offices, it's a set of offices that are really out there doing training, making sure that people are aware, working with people to make sure their practices are following the rules that are out there, the rules of the university," she says. "So some of this may be related to Felner, but frankly, some of this is what universities are doing anyway."Willihnganz says the new office should find the signs of trouble earlier and help the university prevent more situations like Felner's.
