University Presidents Meet With Beshear

From Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeigh The presidents of the state’s public universities met with Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear this morning at the State Capitol. Budget cuts, tuition increases and the Council on Postsecondary Education were among the topics discussed during the hour-long meeting in the governor’s office.University of Louisville President James Ramsey is concerned the universities are getting a bad rap over tuition hikes, despite considerable progress."I would step back and look at it from what’s happened over the last 10 years and I think there has been incredible progress. And I think that gets lost in some of the debate about the council, the personalities and the structure," said Ramsey.Ramsey says the presidents want to make sure that progress continues. The universities submit their tuition proposals to the Council on Postsecondary Education on Friday. Public hearings will be held next week. The presidents had little to say to reporters about the CPE’s choice of Brad Cowgill as president. Governor Beshear is seeking an attorney general’s opinion on the legality of the hiring.
