UofL To Open Free Legal Clinic Next Year

University of Louisville law students will get real-life experience working with clients in a new downtown legal clinic that will be offered through the Brandeis School of Law. The clinic is expected to open next spring and will be located in the Legal Aid Society building on Muhammad Ali Boulevard.Law Professor Lars Smith will serve as director of the clinic. A small number of students will work in the clinic at first, and Smith will directly supervise everything they do."It is similar in idea to the way medical schools train doctors, where you put them in contact with patients and make them make decisions about patients’ care. Here what we do is put them into situations where they represent clients, and they make decisions about client representation and advising clients," said Smith.Students will get class credit for participating in the clinic – only students in at least the third year of law school will be eligible to serve in the clinic.
