War Coverage Conference Set At UK

By Stu Johnson, Kentucky Public RadioA four-day conference at the University of Kentucky this week will give participants a chance to analyze modern media coverage of war from several perspectives. The Conference on War, Journalism, and History will examine coverage of conflicts after World War Two.Terry Anderson with U-K’s School of Journalism and Telecommunications is an organizer of the event. The former chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press was held hostage for almost seven years in Beirut. Anderson says there's traditionally been an adversarial relationship between the media and the military.“Military’s goal is to win wars the journalist goal is to tell the public what’s happening, sometimes those are conflicting goals,” he said. The conference runs Thursday through Sunday at UK.

Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
