Water Company Isolates Broken Main

The Louisville Water Company has isolated another broken water main near the University of Louisville campus. The main burst around 9 pm and the water company reported that service returned to normal at 10:45.The break comes days aftera main at Floyd and Warnock streets that broke last month was replaced. This week, crews had been slowly increasing the water pressure on the replaced main before bringing the pipe online. When mains burst, the sudden drop in pressure can exploit weaknesses in adjoining pipes. The renewed pressure can then cause those pipes to burst. No cause is known for the first break, and no cause has been reported for the subsequent rupture.Mains can be replaced without disrupting service because the water company has a redundant system. The first main break cost the company some $250,000 in repairs, which will be paid out of a contingency fund. The Louisville Water Company says no boil advisory was issued, but updated their website frequently after the break. An LG&E gas pipe also broke. Company officials say there is no danger of an explosion.
