Water Main Repairs Could Take Three Weeks

Repairs to a water main that burst on Monday evening could take up to three weeks according to the Louisville Water Company. The 48-inch, 80-year-old pipe ruptured near Floyd and Warnock streets. More than 40 million gallons of water flooded U of L's Belknap campus and the leak caused a drop in pressure and boil advisory for much of central Louisville. The boil advisory has since been lifted.Crews spent much of the week trying simply to reach the broken main. Early next week, repairs will begin. The company will have to move an embankment and likely close several lanes of Eastern Parkway to fully reach the pipe.Water Company President Greg Heitzman posted an apology for the break on the LWC website. Please accept our sincere apology for the disruption this break might have caused your business and your personal life. We are already reviewing our procedures to make certain that we are doing everything we can to minimize the risk of future breaks and to ensure that you continue to receive an uninterrupted supply of Pure Tap to your business and your home.

A company spokeswoman previously told WFPL the accident shouldn't affect customers' bills, since the cost for repairs will come out of a contingency account. The cause of the break is still unknown.
