WFPL News in January: New Programs, New Times for Some Favorites, and Goodbye to Whad’ya Know

I’m making some changes to the WFPL News schedule in January. You’ll find the new grid here, but here are a few notes of explanation.Whad’ya Know is Leaving the ScheduleFor fans of the show, this will be a blow. But the overall audience reaction to the show is clear: WYK receives the most complaints of any show we air, and listening to the show has dropped precipitously since 2009. Fans can still listen to the show online, but we will focus on programs that appeal to more of our members and listeners.Saturday Afternoon Changes The Moth Radio Hour/ Radiolab block is moving to 1pm, after This American Life. Snap Judgment, which features riveting storytelling hosted by Glynn Washington, moves from Saturday nights to afternoons at 2pm. Day 6 joins the lineup permanently at 3pm. And Bob Edwards Weekend moves to 4pm, to provide a solid lead-in for Weekend All Things Considered.A New Sound for Sunday NightsSundays from 8-10pm, we’re introducing Public Radio Remix, from PRX, the home of The Moth Radio Hour. Remix is a new format for public radio that presents curated, smart, creative spoken-word programs, amazing podcasts, cool ideas and fascinating interviews. It’s like public radio on shuffle - you’ll be surprised how well excellent storytelling flows from one piece to the next. It’s addictive.Marketplace Money ReturnsPublic radio’s best personal finance program is back - Sundays at 10am.Bullseye with Jesse ThornThorn has hosted The Sound of Young America for a few years now... delving into pop and serious culture through long-form interviews and regular features. The show’s name was tongue-in-cheek, but some listeners actually thought it was a show for young people. It’s for everyone. And just as we add the show in January, it will take on a new name... but with the same smart and funny host.A New Time for The State We’re InIra Glass will tell anyone who will listen that this show is amazing; and last fall at a conference, while I was introducing NPR’s Audie Cornish to a room full of public radio people, she demanded to meet TSWI host Jonathan Groubert when she found out he was there. The State We’re In has aired on Sundays at 10pm for a couple years, but in January, it moves to Saturdays at 6am.I’m always interested in hearing your thoughts on these changes, or anything else you want to talk about. info@wfpl.org
