The WFPL News staff took home ten total first place awards over the weekend from the Kentucky and Indiana Associated Press Broadcasters.In Kentucky:
- The news staff won the Best Newscast award
- The news staff received the Best Political Coverage award for reports on the 2011 Fancy Farm Picnic
- Devin Katayama won the Best Use of Sound award for his audio portrait of the Kentucky State Fair
- Devin Katayama's State Fair piece also won the Best Light News Feature award
- Graham Shelby received the Best Enterprise Reporting award for his story on the Shakespeare Behind Bars program
- Gabe Bullard won the Best Spot News award for his report on the 2011 Grawemeyer Music Composition Award winner
In Indiana:
- Rick Howlett won the Best Reporter award
- Rick Howlett received the Best Feature award for his piece on Kentucky's bourbon industry
- Devin Katayama's state fair story won the Best Use of Sound award
- Erica Peterson's series on coal ash won the Best News Series award
In addition, the WFPL news staff received runner up certificates and honorable mentions in many other categories.
