Williams Lectures Moffett on Campaign Finance Reports

After his campaign reported a negative balance of $513 in first quarter fundraising, Republican gubernatorial candidate Phil Moffett received a lecture on fiscal responsibility from state Senate President David Williams during a recent debate. For months, Moffett, a Louisville businessman backed by the Tea Party, has preached fiscal restraint and slammed state lawmakers over government spending. On this occasion, however, Williams, who is the GOP frontrunner, responded with a knockout. From cn|2 Pure Politics:“After over a year in this campaign can you not get enough support to even balance your own books?” Williams asked. “If you can’t balance the books in your own campaign, how can you balance the books of the Commonwealth of Kentucky?”

Ouch!According to a financial report filed Wednesday with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, the Moffett campaign raised $45,883 in the first three months of the year. However, he spent  more than $55,000 during the same period.Moffett blamed the numbers on a computer glitch, saying he will have a $20,000 balance once his campaign amends the report.Williams reported raising $446,943 in the first quarter with a remaining balance of $669,839.
