Williams Mostly Positive On Budget Plan

by Tony McVeigh, Kentucky Public RadioKentucky Senate President David Williams is signaling thumbs up to the budget compromise offered by Gov. Steve Beshear. The governor is proposing a two-year, 17-point-one-billion dollar spending plan that includes no new taxes, limited bonding and prioritized spending cuts. Williams applauds the effort.“I cannot account for what the House will agree, or will not agree to," he says. "But I believe that we are in agreement with what the governor has said today. Of course, the House is of his party and it will be kind of his responsibility to get them in agreement.”In a statement issued by his office, House Speaker Greg Stumbo is also praising the governor’s proposal. But Stumbo still has concerns about the possibility of reaching agreement with the Senate on a new state road plan and “crumbling schools.” A special session on the budget begins May 24th.
