Yarmuth Looks To Protect Legislative Victories From Repeal

For the first time in his career, Third District Congressman John Yarmuth will be in the minority Democratic party in the House.Yarmuth says he's been pleased with new Republican Speaker John Boehner's nods to bipartisanship, but he's not sure whether that will pan out over the next two years. While Yarmuth has his concerns about GOP's plans for the upcoming session, he says the party may have difficulty reigning in newly-elected representatives."I think that if they try to do things like push to abolish the Internal Revenue Service or the Department of Education like many of their new members have proposed, I think that's going to set the Democrats up very well politically going in to 2012," he says.Yarmuth says the new majority's plan to vote for a repeal of the healthcare overhaul is largely symbolic. He adds that pieces of the law and other legislation passed by the previous Congress may be under attack, and the Democrats will likely be focused on preserving their legislative victories.
