Yarmuth: Obama Has Right to Politicize bin Laden Death

For most of the week Republicans have been critical of an attack ad by President Obama's re-election campaign highlighting the death of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden. But Democratic Congress John Yarmuth believes its proper for the president to politicize the issue.The ad released earlier this month features former President Bill Clinton, who says Mr. Obama made a tough but important decision. The ad also suggests—without naming him—that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney would had failed to go after the al-Qaeda leader.Watch it below:Yarmuth says that the president should rightfully take credit for bin Laden’s downfall and has been restrained in using the killing for the re-election campaign."I think he has every right to politicize it. I think he’s actually been much more moderate in talking about on the anniversary than many others would have been. Everything right now is done and seen through a political prism. Everything that he does is going to have some kind of political consideration," he says.Several political observers have called the ad "despicable" and "disgusting" attack. Others have said the spot is in bound given advertisements run by former President George W. Bush in 2004, which accused his opponent of being weak on terrorism. But Yarmuth says President Obama has been successful on national defense, and has every right to brag about the al-Qaeda leader’s downfall. "I know it’s causing great heartache in the Republican ranks because he’s taken that entire issue off the table," he says. "As a matter of fact he has now appropriated it for his own."Romney has said the president’s spot is “very disappointing.”
