Yarmuth: Twenty-Percent of Eligibles are Missing EITC

Congressman John Yarmuth of Louisville says about twenty-percent of taxpayers who qualify for earned-income tax credits don’t get them because they don’t apply for them.  He says there are a lot of misconceptions about the tax credits.“A lot of people may fill out their tax returns, thinking that they may get them just by filling out the return," says Yarmuth, "that’s one thing you have to do, but you can’t get it unless you file a tax return, but also you have to specially request them.”He says one way to insure qualified families are applying for the tax credit is to use a tax preparation service.  He says the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program – or VITA  – is available at no cost to low-income families.
