Update 3:43 p.m.: JCPS Closed
Jefferson County Public Schools will be closed Friday, Superintendent Donna Hargens announced during a Thursday news conference.
Hargens said JCPS was concerned about sub-zero temperatures on Friday morning. It's the sixth snow day for JCPS.
Mayor Greg Fischer called Thursday one of the "coldest days in the modern history of our city." He asked residents to continue taking precautions for the weather, because Friday morning will be cold, too.
He also urged residents to contact the Metropolitan Sewer District if they see water pooling at a catch basin in the next few days. Flooding is a concern this weekend; MSD will have crews out clearing those catch basins, officials said.
Update 3:16 p.m.: School Closings
In its most recent update, the National weather Service said the Louisville area should expect snow and a wintry mix on Friday evening and overnight, with some snow and ice accumulation possible.
Saturday is expected to have moderate to heavy rain, the National Weather Service said. That added to the melting snow could lead to flooding issues.
As for Friday, the overnight low is forecast to be -11. The National Weather Service forecast said the high temperature Friday will be about 23.
Oldham County Schools, Bullitt County Public Schools, Nelson County Schools and Spencer County Public Schools have already announced that they'll be closed Friday.
Earlier: The temperature in Louisville at about 6 a.m. Thursday was 0--and the National Weather Service forecasts it'll only rise to 6 before the day ends. And a wind chill warning is in effect for Louisville and surrounding areas until noon; wind chills could reach into the -20s or even -30s in the region.
The extremely cold temperatures have led to several closings in the Louisville area, including Jefferson County Public Schools, Jefferson County Catholic Schools and the University of Louisville.
